Pakistan's first twenty20 International
The game was a lot more tense than I thought. I thought we played well....I am glad we won. We should have a lot more convincingly than we did though.
Some thoughts:
1 - I have always believed that ODI cricket was moving more and more towards allrounders. Flintoff, Giles, Klusener, Pollock, Pathan, Razzak and Afridi to name a few. I had a feeling that in a few years, the specialized bowler would be a dead term. However, after watching yesterday's top order annihilation by Mohd. Asif and Shoaib, I am not convinced that specialized bowlers are here to stay. Some might think this was pretty obvious already...but I really did believe that we would eventually be playing 5 batsman, a wicket keeper, and 4 allrounders.
2 - Pakistan needs a specialist Twenty20 team. Why are people like Inzy et al playing. He really did look out of sorts while playing. I am sure one of our domestic teams or a few rather, have a surfeit of players who are hard hitting batsman. Twenty20 is too short for getting one's eye in. Inzy and people of his calibre, who play for the big runs are not suited to this type of cricket. The game is evolving...so should the make up of our teams.
3 - This is definitely Afridi and Razzak's playground. I would send them up the order. Bring Taufeeq Umar, Salman Butt, Imran Farhat back. My team for twenty20 would be Razzak, Afridi (captain), Akmal, Butt, Umar, Farhat, Asif, Shoaib Malik, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohd. Hafeez....Let Inzi, Moyo and Younis relax and make themselves ready for the bigger games..the test matches. Let these aggressive youngsters do the shortest format.
